Response to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program Termination

September 8, 2017

To the UCO Community,

The University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) Latino Faculty & Staff Association stands with and wholeheartedly supports our Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and undocumented students at UCO. We are immensely disheartened by the decision from the current Administration to end the DACA Program, which was announced on September 5th, 2017.

Over 12,000 DACA applications have been approved in Oklahoma as of March 31st, 2017 according to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services agency. The decision to end the DACA Program will not only impact the individual lives of these recipients, but it will also affect their families, our communities, the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, and the state.

Our DACA and undocumented students are thriving in college, and we are proud of their work, their dedication, and their success. DACA has provided our students with deferral of deportation. It has also allowed our students to legally work to pay for their college tuition, contribute financially to their families, and be productive members of our state and nation. Regrettably, the decision to terminate the DACA Program has erased the recipients’ sense of security and created an unnerving notion of uncertainty.

The Latino Faculty & Staff Association will continue to work with our university leadership to advocate for our DACA and undocumented students on campus and will combine our efforts with those of other members of the UCO community to provide resources to our students. We appeal to our fellow Bronchos to take action to reach out to Congress and urge our elected representatives to find a reasonable pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients and their families.

Adelante!
